What is SEM?

This is a blog regarding SEM, and it seeks to tell my readers about the common words associated with the SEM or Search Engine Marketing in common man's language. So to start all of this I thought it will be very useful to provide some background on Search Engine Marketing.

Search Engine Marketing or SEM is an online marketing technique which includes promoting a web page or a site through a search engine, either by placing paid listings or ads on search engines i.e. Pay Per Click, or getting the site top Search engine rankings through other means i.e. Search Engine Optimization.

But what are Search Engines?. Search engine is a computer program that retrieves data from a database or from a computer network including internet. But wait, don't get confused the SEM does not include all the computer networks. SEM is done for the websites which operate on publicly accessible networks or which have a URL. The kind of Search Engines involved in data retrival on the vast network of internet are called web search engines. All of we are familiar with Google, which is a web search engine.
So does SEM involves working for visibility on Google. Yes. SEM also involves getting top placements on other similar search engines like Yahoo and Bing.
